Shetland Fiddle Society

Bring Your Fiddle

Whether you've played for years or never held a bow, there's a chair waiting for you in Lerwick.

What it's really like

A warm room, a shared tune, and no auditions

We meet every week in Lerwick to play through the tunes that have travelled down generations — reels and listening pieces with that unmistakable Shetland lilt, carrying their Norse and Scottish roots. You don't need to read music, and you certainly don't need to keep up. Most folk learn by ear, leaning across to ask the name of a tune.

Beginners sit alongside players who've fiddled for decades, and everyone shares the same aim: keeping these tunes alive and passing them on. Bring your fiddle, settle in, and play what you can — the rest comes with the company. Members also get the run of our archive of 300+ transcribed tunes and a place on our annual trips to folk festivals across the UK and Scandinavia.

Your first session is on us

Drop in to a Wednesday session in Lerwick to see how it works, or send us a line and we'll point you to the right night for your level. New players are always welcome.
